Ramblings for 12/20/2006

By bhuber - Posted on 20 December 2006

Long time no post, well I've been busy. (What other excuse did you expect me to use?) This is going to be a long post about my work since the last posting. I've learned a lot since then and have been able to work with some great software!

Christmas Already?
WOW! I can't believe it almost Christmas already, it really doesn't seem like it. The weather here in Wilton, IA sure hasn't been really anything winter like. We even missed out on a big snow storm a couple of weeks back, not that it would matter now as it all has melted anyway. I finally got the inside of my house decorated for Christmas a week or so back even with a new 6.5ft fiber optic tree. I'll post some picture in the future of my lights and stuff.

WordPress What?
Currently I'm working on setting up an interesting blog for a friend using WordPress and it going very well. I'll post the address to the site when its done! :-)

It has been a very pleasant experience (WordPress) thus far. I'm considering replacing PostNuke with either WordPress or Drupal for HUBERHOME. I haven't really put much thought into it but hey you never know.

Drupal Anyone?
I'm using Drupal for Online Grades (www.onlinegrades.org) and it has to be one of the easiest content management systems I have used so far. I just finished the Drupal/Gallery integration some time last week it took some reading to get it done but it wasn't bad.

Wilton CSD 2.0
Before Thanksgiving I finally was able to give my work website (www.wiltoncsd.org) a much need overhaul. The site is still running the same back end software but with a much need face lift and brand spankin' new web 2.0ish style contact directory.

Gone are the days of pure JavaScript menus that need to be updated with windows software. I've replaced them with a DHTML and CSS based menu that works much better if JavaScript is disabled or unavailable.

The page now works much better on smaller screens; this has been a constant complaint for the past year or so. The entire site is now much tighter integrated together with a more consistent style across the majority of all of the pages. I’ve really had fun taking the website into the next generation; it’s been a wonderful experience for me.

Last but not least my favorite part of the new site, ok so it was there on the old one too, but it’s even better now. The employee directory! It pulls almost all of the data from Active Directory and it running on a PHP on BSD. The pictures of the staff are pulled from the file system, in the efforts of full disclosure. It uses Lightbox Gone Wild (http://particletree.com/features/lightbox-gone-wild/) to show the employees’ information in a window that sits on top of the page, if JavaScript is disabled then it just goes to the normal page. Its really cool you should check it out, unless you’re a spammer then your in for a special treat! Want to see it in action read on!

Design and Development Gallery
If you want to see or visit any of the sites that I have worked on check out my “Design Portfolio” it located on the left hand side of this page. There you will find some more information about some of my past and current projects and may even be able to visit the site and see it in action. If you would like more information about hiring me to help with your web site development please email me bhuber@huber-home.org, I promise I won’t break the bank.

Alright this is enough for one day, I do have more to ramble about but I’ll save that for anther day. Check back often…

Beau
